How to Play Uno

Uno is the world's most popular card game. Match cards by color or number, unleash action cards to disrupt opponents, and be the first to empty your hand — shouting "UNO!" when you're down to one card.

Number cards (0–9)

76 cards

Match by color or number. The backbone of the game — each color has cards 0 through 9.

Skip

8 cards

The next player in turn loses their turn. Play on matching color or another Skip.

Reverse

8 cards

Reverses the direction of play (clockwise → counterclockwise). In a 2-player game, acts as a Skip.

Draw Two (+2)

8 cards

Next player draws 2 cards and loses their turn. Play on matching color or another Draw Two.

Wild

4 cards

Play on any color. Declare any color when playing it — your choice takes effect immediately.

Wild Draw Four (+4)

4 cards

Strongest card. Next player draws 4 and loses turn. You must call a new color. Only playable when you have no card matching the current color.

Complete rules

1

Deal and setup

Deal 7 cards to each player. Place remaining cards face-down (draw pile). Flip the top card to start the discard pile. If it's a Wild Draw Four, shuffle back and flip again.

2

Taking a turn

Match the top discard card by COLOR or NUMBER (or type for action cards). If you can't match, draw one card from the draw pile — if it matches, play it immediately; otherwise keep it and pass.

3

Calling UNO

When you play your second-to-last card and have only ONE card left, you MUST say "UNO!" before the next player takes a turn. If caught not saying it, draw 2 penalty cards.

4

Winning

First player to play all their cards wins the round. In multi-round play, winners score the value of cards in opponents' hands (number cards = face value, action cards = 20, Wilds = 50).

Frequently asked questions

Can you stack Draw Two or Draw Four cards?

In the official Mattel rules: No — stacking is NOT allowed. If you're hit with a +2 or +4, you must draw. However, "stacking" is the most popular house rule worldwide — check with your group before playing. Board Game Battles follows official rules by default.

What happens if the draw pile runs out?

Shuffle the discard pile (keeping only the top card in place) to form a new draw pile. Continue play normally.

Can you play a Wild Draw Four on any color?

No — Wild Draw Four can only be played when you have NO card that matches the current color. If you play it illegally and are challenged and caught, you draw 4 yourself. If the challenge fails, the challenger draws 6.

How many players can play Uno?

Official rules: 2–10 players. The game becomes chaotic and fun with 6+. For competitive play, 2–4 players gives more strategic depth. For parties, 6–8 players is the sweet spot.
