How to Play Chess

Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 grid. Each player starts with 16 pieces — 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 8 Pawns. The goal: checkmate your opponent's King.

How each piece moves

King ♔

One square in any direction. Most important piece — protect it at all costs.

Queen ♛

Any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical or diagonal). Most powerful piece.

Rook ♜

Any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Powerful in open files and endgames.

Bishop ♝

Any number of squares diagonally. Each bishop stays on its starting color forever.

Knight ♞

L-shape: 2 squares in one direction + 1 perpendicular. Only piece that can jump over others.

Pawn ♟

Forward one square (two on first move). Captures diagonally. Promotes to any piece upon reaching the last rank.

5 essential rules

1

The objective

Checkmate your opponent's King — put it under attack with no legal escape. The game also ends by stalemate (draw), resignation, or time (in timed games).

2

Check

When the King is under direct attack. The player in check must resolve it immediately — by moving the King, blocking the attack, or capturing the attacking piece.

3

Castling

Special move: King moves two squares toward a Rook, and the Rook jumps to the other side. Requirements: neither piece has moved before, no squares between them occupied, King not in check.

4

En passant

If a pawn advances two squares from its starting position next to an opponent's pawn, that pawn can capture it as if it had moved only one square — but only on the very next move.

5

Pawn promotion

When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it must be promoted to a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight. Almost always promoted to a Queen.

Opening principles

Control the center

Place pawns on e4/d4 (White) or e5/d5 (Black). The center controls more of the board — whoever controls it has more options.

Develop your pieces

Get Knights and Bishops off the back rank in the first 10 moves. Pieces stuck at home can't fight.

Castle early

Castle within the first 10–12 moves to tuck your King away safely and connect your Rooks.

Don't move the same piece twice

Every move should develop a new piece. Re-moving developed pieces wastes tempos your opponent uses to build their position.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a chess game last?

It depends on the time control. Blitz chess: 3–5 minutes per player. Rapid: 15–25 min. Classical: 90+ minutes. A casual beginner game without a clock can take 20–40 minutes. Most competitive games use clocks to enforce a limit.

What is the best first move in chess?

1.e4 (King's pawn opening) is the most popular beginner and grandmaster choice — it fights for the center immediately. 1.d4 (Queen's pawn) is equally popular at the top level. For beginners, 1.e4 is recommended because it leads to more open positions that teach piece activity.

Can the King capture pieces?

Yes — the King can capture any undefended enemy piece adjacent to it, as long as capturing wouldn't put it in check. The King can never move to a square attacked by an enemy piece.

What is stalemate?

Stalemate happens when a player has no legal moves but is NOT in check. It's an automatic draw — regardless of how much material advantage one side has. A common beginner mistake is accidentally stalemating a nearly-beaten opponent.
