How to Play Catan

Catan (Settlers of Catan) is one of the most influential board games of the modern era. Collect resources, build roads and settlements, trade with opponents, and race to 10 Victory Points on a randomly generated island board.

4 winning strategies

Pick high-probability numbers

Numbers 6 and 8 are rolled most often (5 ways each out of 36). Settle near 6s, 8s, 5s and 9s for consistent resource income. Avoid 2 and 12 — rolled only 1 way each.

Diversify resources

You need all 5 resources to build everything. Don't over-concentrate on one resource — even wood-brick openings stall without grain/ore for cities.

Block opponents early

Build roads aggressively to cut off expansion paths. A blocked player can't expand to good spots and struggles to win.

Cities beat settlements

Each city produces double resources and costs 2 VP vs 1 VP for settlements. Rushing city upgrades is often the most efficient path to 10 VP.

Frequently asked questions

How many players is Catan best with?

The base game supports 3–4 players. With 3 players, games are faster and less crowded (60–90 min). With 4 players, board tension is higher and games last 90–120 minutes. The "5–6 Player Extension" expansion adds more players, but standard games are best at 4.

What does the robber do in Catan?

When a 7 is rolled, the active player moves the robber to any hex — that hex produces no resources until the robber moves again. The player also steals one random card from a player with a settlement or city adjacent to the robber's new location. Additionally, any player with 8+ cards must discard half on a 7.

Can you trade with other players in Catan?

Yes — trading is a core mechanic. On your turn, you may trade resource cards with other players at any agreed ratio. You may also trade with the "bank" at 4:1 by default (or 2:1/3:1 with harbor settlements). Negotiating trades is as important as building.

What are development cards for?

Development cards (bought for 1 Ore + 1 Wool + 1 Grain) offer: Knight cards (move the robber, earn Largest Army if you play 3+), Progress cards (Road Building, Year of Plenty, Monopoly), and Victory Point cards (worth 1 VP immediately when revealed). Knights and VP cards are most impactful.
